We keep hearing that others have better Byron Numbers for this and for that reason… and therefore keep winning!
An alternative solution may be on the horizon. The RYA have scraped the Portsmouth Yardstick for cruisers and are developing a new system in conjunction with the RORC Ratings Office in Lymington. According to a recent article in their member magazine the idea will be to use a base figure provided for the boat which will be adjusted at club level for kit and performance to produce a handicap. The RYA is working with race results programmes such as Sailwave, Sail 100 and HALS” Race Results to automate the adjustment process in the programmes.
It should be interesting to see the result.
